From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K—In this sequel to Llama Llama Red Pajama (Viking, 2005), the hoofed protagonist goes shopping with his mother. Gradually the small annoyances of the Shop-O-Rama ("Yucky music,/great big feet./Ladies smelling way too sweet....Try it on and take it off./Pull and wiggle,/itch and cough") send the youngster into a tantrum: "It's no fun at Shop-O-Rama./Llama Llama/MAD at Mama!" With admirable patience and parenting skills, Mama tames the "llama drama," explaining to her son that they can make the chore fun by working together. Soon Llama Llama is helping Mama clean up the messy results of his meltdown and complete their purchases, and then they are off to pursue more pleasurable activities. Children will giggle at Dewdney's rhythmic rhymes. The inviting, oversized paintings are bold and colorful, and Llama Llama's priceless expressions carry the emotional arc of the story to its gentle conclusion. Add this amusing tale to your storytime repertoire or recommend it for one-on-one sharing.—Jayne Damron, Farmington Community Library, MI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Her passion for creating extended to home and garden and she lovingly restored an 18th century farmhouse in southern Vermont. These books are a wonderful series by an amazing author who will be sorely missed. Llama Llama books capture the challenges of being a young child (and a caregiver). With remarkable simplicity, rhyming language, excellent artwork, Dewdney illustrates struggles faced by young children. The situations Llama Llama finds himself are completely relatable. She captures his anxiety about new situations perfectly, provides them with understanding and a gentle, loving resolve at the end.In this book, Llama Llama does not want to go shopping. He finds it boring and eventually explodes in a tantrum. Mama Llama scolds him but finds that she must include him in the tasks to make the shopping trip enjoyable for everyone.I love these books because they let children feel understood while giving parents reminders on how to help their children cope. Must read for toddlers
Mama Llama did the right thing.A lot of parents might frown upon the mama rewarding Llama Llama with an ice cream after he throws the "mother" of all tantrums in the store. Of course this type of behavior should be addressed, but as a parent, you know your child best in the world. I would estimate Llama Llama to be no more than 3 years old. I have a son this age, and I have been able to teach better lessons by exhibiting calmness, empathy, and yet still expressing that the tantrum cannot and will not continue, and that fun can be had if we work together. If I show anger...all he sees is anger, not a mama who wants to help him. If tantrums continue, we leave the store. If he can listen and calm down, there is NO harm in rewarding their ability to control their emotions. That's a GOOD thing and should be praised in small children, who are still learning about themselves.Anna Dewdney knows her stuff. We love this book to pieces!
I don't really get the excitement about llamas, but my son loves this book!! He makes me say, "llama, llama that's enough!" over and over. When he starts acting out, I tell him not to act like llama llama at the shoporama and he straightens up. Lol!
My daughter fell in love with the Llama Llama Red Pajama book. It was so relatable for her, and so cleverly written. It has always been in our nightly rotation of bedtime books. But, I was getting tired of the same book EVERY night.I was so thrilled to find this book, which is perfect for us because she's not the best shopper.Dewdney's books take common toddler experiences and puts them into cute, easy-to-understand narratives that children love. We'll be Llama Llama fans for years to come, I'm sure!
We have a 2.5-year old who is starting to have more and unidentifiable emotions, so we ordered this book to help him see his behavior, and help coach appropriate reactions (versus acting out.)This is our first Llama Llama book, and we really like it. It's appropriate for his age (decently sized lettering, clear verbiage. We got the hardcover, which is a good size for the illustrations to be clear and lovely.)
This tone with which is inferred within the book itself, I feel; as a Mental Health therapist, that the manner in which you present the “angerâ€, comes across as being harsh, negative and sometimes even supports the emotion of “angerâ€Although I like many other books with Llamla Llama, this one was just not one which I would feel comfortable for his age.
My little girl loves all the llama llama books. I think this one has really helped her realize that everyone has rough days, but we can always turn them around. It really helps children when they see a character that is familiar go through all the day to days they experience... Super cute and relatable for my little minx!
I find the rhythm of this book pleasing but my 2.5 year old HATES it. I can hardly get out “llama llam—-“ before he shouts “NO!†Plus it’s intense, like a huge explosion of emotion in the bulk of the book. So the vibe sucks. I doubt that kids see their reactions and tantrums as being quite as a explosive as this book would have you believe, even though we know they are. I almost feel like it mocks my son for not yet knowing how to control his temper. Anyway, I’ve grown to feel annoyed that it’s written with such poor sentence structure even though the cadence is good. Meh. We never read it and will likely donate it.
We love the llama llama books. My daughter loves to watch Llama melt down and point out how he could have made better decisions to help mommy (we have a lot of meltdowns so I like her seeing it from another perspective). The book is good because after the meltdown it shows Mama Llama handling the situation calmly while helping Llama Llama to understand the situation and help rectify it. Cute book
