Book came as described, however, I was missing 9 pages or so from the book (it skipped from pg 110 to 119). I don't know if this was a publisher error or not, but I missed a decent amount of the story and affected some of my understanding of what was going on.

excellent

The book came as stated.Shipping was very reasonable! I needed my book in order to read it in time for a class I was taking&was able to do so! Thanks again!!

I enjoyed this author's honesty. It makes you realize that disability can happen to any one of us and wonder what would happen if it did? Her writing is open, honest and easy to read. I also learned alot about diabetes.

Most of what I see online and hear from my doctors about diabetics makes it sound like it should all be easy and any *feelings* one might have about it can be neatly dealt with and put away without much impact on one's blood sugar control or general quality of life. That has not been the case for me at all, and it was so refreshing to read the story of a diabetic who has gone through similar. She doesn't shy away from acknowledge the unrelenting and sometimes harrowing nature of being dependent on insulin and what it is like living in fear of "dead in bed" syndrome or (hopefully) far off complications, or how those possibilities limit one's life choices and impact relationships. She tells it like it is, not feeling overly sorry for herself (in fact, I do hope that if I ever face the sort of complications that she has, that I can deal with it as level-headedly) but making it clear that it is, in fact, not easy and of course we're going to have feelings about it that cannot be neatly contained. It is a crappy hand to be dealt! But she manages to do very well for herself (in terms of her physical condition and the life she managed to create for herself) in spite of it *even though* she is not one of those annoying perfect diabetics who couldn't imagine why someone would eat something they shouldn't or do a shot without testing or the like. While there's a lot in there that's scary, it is somehow uplifting, but most of all her story feels very real.I wanted to address another reviewers complaint that the book wasn't well written and they had to toss it out: This complaint is from completely out of left field. It is perfectly readable, for sure, and I liked her writing style. I read a lot and I have certainly run across stuff that I'm irritated by bc it's poorly written, but not this book at all. I think I hardly noticed the writing, but that is a compliment. This book wasn't about beautiful flowery scenes, and I think it was a good thing that the writing was not distracting. And it wasn't!

Having a daughter with diabetes I was quite familiar with some of the experiences that the writer shares with her readers. Andie's insights and honesty are at times mindnumbing but necessary reading for any parent who has a young maturing child who is a diabetic. This book is up close and personal. It is not a fairy tale and at times is breathtakingly emotional. Andie's story displays diabetes as the ruthless, debilitating, ultimately fatal disease it is. This book clarifies the many reasons why people who are diabetic often act or feel the way they do. I think it would be an especially good book for those health care professionals who are in a postition of caring for diabetics, to read. As a person who is so close to the disease and affected every minute of every day by it, I praise and laud Andie for her heartfelt honesty and courage in writing such a clear view into the world of being a diabetic. I look forward to more writings from this very talented author.

The book was good, no doubt. The writing was compelling, but as I sit back having just finished the book, I don't really understand how it made me feel.I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes almost a year ago now, and have learned a lot about dealing with the disease since then. This books scares me in a way because of the pessimism Andie and Denise seem to have toward the disease in the book. But I must remind myself, this was a different time. The past 25 years or so have improved things tramatically. They had hard-to-work with insulins they took two shots of a day. I have a pump the delivers precise doses tailored to my needs. Two things I found difficult with the book, besides the heavy subject material, was how hard it was to follow the time frame- dates are rarely mentioned, but it pulls together at the end. Also, toward the second half of the book it deals a lot with complications, but mentions little about what she is doing to control the disease at that point. All in all, a good read, but if you have diabetes, don't be discouraged by it.

In all, Needles was a good memoir of living life with Type 1 diabetes. If you're looking for a happy, positive story about living with a chronic condition, this probably isn't for you, but the other 99% of books on diabetes are usually full of advice (though not necessarily practical) on that subject. What this book does, however, is shows one person's real experience with living with diabetes, which isn't always as great as the medical professionals would have everyone believe. Andie Dominick is a good author and helps provide a perspective that is noticably absent from the field of publishing on diabetes.
