I didn't know what to expect when I picked up this book, I was expecting something simpler by the cover, but I'm in love with the old comics/cartoon style. there is a bit of mania in the pictures, and I feel like I sometimes get lost in the background characters or bits detail before I come back to Lobo, but it is wonderful. A book kids and adults can come back to again and again. There are a lot of illustrators I look forward to every year, and Raúl the third is now one of them.
My six year old couldn’t get enough of it! He was pointing all over the pages asking “Does this mean...?†and getting excited when he was right! This is a great little story of Lobo and Bernabé. It’s like a Where’s Waldo? Of Spanish vocabulary. My bilingual students will love helping with correct pronunciation and similar words in English. Raúl the Third has written an excellent picture book!
This is one of those rarest books that parents will love to read to their kiddos.Artwork and imagination is terrific, presentation wonderful, and it's really cool to teach and learn Spanish along the way...and in a fun fashion. The book truly captures the Mexican/Latino spirit, specifically cuisine, culture, and entertainment. Within every page are oodles of little visual nuggets conveying these, with it likely you'll find a new one with every reading. On a logistical note: everything is in English with Spanish provided next to every item presented. Meaning, you can read a story...stop to learn/teach a word in Spanish corresponding to an object that catches a kiddo's eye..and then move along at your own pace. Being able to dive in/out of a page in this fashion keeps things lively. Thus, if you don't know a single word in Spanish, this book won't hold you back in any way, shape or form. In fact, the opposite occurs, in you'll accidentally learn Spanish along the way!
Reviewed by my wife: I'm a polyglot and a teacher of language (Hebrew, Spanish, others) for many years. While some cry "foul" at the intermixture of one language with another, in my experience, this is a HUGELY effective way to build comprehension, and to activate whole-language learning (as opposed to rote memorization that is largely inaccessible in real-life usage). This storybook has a cute and engaging day in the life of a anthropomorphic animal community where lots of fun and useful vocabulary is introduced via dialog, signage in the illustrations, and labels and asides on the pages. The illustrations are sort of a cross between early Disney and traditional Mexican folk art. The colors have a sepia/vintage feel, and it makes for a really vibey, fascinating "look" that's distinct from any of the other picture books in your pile. It's well made, with full-color cover, hardback, and heavy paper for reading over and over again.
Little kids pick up language(s) so easily. Our Grandson enjoys Lobo and Bernabes adventures in the mercado ( market) He enjoys the scenes and each time we read we find more detail. For this reason I would highly recommend the hardcover book rather than the kindle version. You are not overloaded with spanish on every page but a few words, phrases are used. It's fun! The book is very affordable and I look forward to a series from the author. The artwork is a bit different, it's not as cutesy as most drawings in childrens books and we enjoy that difference also.
This is a really fun book, with wonderful and wild illustrations. We follow the adventures of Little Lobo and his dog Bernabe as they make deliveries around a traditional Mercado (market). There are many new Spanish words introduced and Spanish phrases that are translated on the same page. The illustrations are jam packed with fun little details for kids to get lost in. We like it!
I thought this book might be a little advanced for our almost three year old but she likes it. She spends a lot of time finding different objects and doesn’t question the different names for each one.The books seems well-made and should stand up to a lot of “readingâ€.
