Review
"A subtle and clear-as-possible history...Laycock makes a substantial contribution to methodological conversations about how to study the strange and unfamiliar...The Seer of Bayside is a fascinating read and a careful history that contributes much to our understanding of religious experience and Catholic prayer in the U.S."--Religion in American History"A fascinating study of phenomena at the fringes of organized religion, certain to appeal to academic readers." -- Library Journal"Joseph Laycock has given us a compelling and very readable account of the drama surrounding one of America's most significant Marian apparition groups." --David G. Bromley, Director, World Religions and Spirituality Project, and Professor of Religious Studies and Sociology, Virginia Commonwealth University "Joseph Laycock has given us an extraordinarily intimate and insightful picture of one of the most significant contemporary Marian movements, described in a manner that will make it must reading for all students of religion, regardless of discipline." --Michael Barkun, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University "Laycock's treatment of the apocalyptic movement that grew from Lueken's visions is sensitive, sophisticated, and evocative. As with all excellent studies of marginal religious groups, The Seer of Bayside sheds as much light on the center as it does on the fringes. The book offers powerful leverage into abiding questions about Catholics' relationship with ecstatic religious experience, sacred places, and modern forms of civil and religious authority." --John C. Seitz, author of No Closure: Catholic Practice and Boston's Parish Shutdowns (2011) "This book brings to life historical figures and events, and is both sympathetic and critical, culminating in a call to historicize and contextualize, rather than merely categorize, movements like that in Bayside."-- Jill Krebs, Nova Religio "This book is illuminating as it stands." --CHURCH HISTORY

I took this book very slow in order to absorb and analyze the theme. As a student of Marian apparitions for the past thirty years I had always written off the Bayside and Necedah events as hogwash. This book did nothing to change my opinion nor do I think it was intended to. Along with Frances Klug, another housewife turned seer here in southern California who created the St. Joseph's Hill Of Hope, Van Hoof and Leuken were, at best, delusional and at worst, satanic. In fact more evidence indicates that latter. Professor Laycock should now turn his obvious gifted scrutiny to those apparitions that merit a closer look in the pantheon of true occurences dating back to Catherine Laboure. If he were to take the time to parse the thread from Fatima to Banneaux and Baureang to Akita he would have more than simply a bestseller, he would have done the Church and, more importantly, humanity a favor of galactic proportions.
I believe the apparitions of our Blessed Virgin Mary to Veronica at Bayside are real. There is nothing heretical in the messages. Many of the messages are reproving, priests, bishops, and cardinals which is why the local Church authorities were so adamant in their reproof of this seer. We are now seeing many of the warnings in the messages becoming our reality. i had never heard of Veronica and our Lady of the Roses until about two years ago when I was blessed to receive notice of the apparitions, read the messages and believed instantly; never doubted. I just wish i had been able to attend one of the gatherings.
Excellent study of the sociology of religion. Most vision experiences since the 19th century have occurred in the context of social and political change, and the alleged apparitions of Bayside are no exception. The book also explains the internal politics of Roman Catholicism on how and why the local bishop rejected the Bayside apparitions. I recall seeing Bayside fliers at my local parish in Texas back in the 1970s even without official sanction.
Excellent reserach and footnotes. The author has delved deeply into the life of Veronica and the archives of the Catholic Church. He also touches on other visions of Mary and psuedo Popes. This book is must reading for anyone with a serious interest in what happened at Bayside and Mariology. A great asset to your religion section. Also, the book is not hard to read. A true enquiry.
When I was in a local Catholic Church group in the late 1970s, we always considered traveling to Bayside to see Veronica in action. (Our sentiments were not exactly pious.) Laycock was onsite with these people, and he gives a balanced discussion of all the controversies about the apparitions (or lack thereof). The book made me realize praying that no one sets up a visionary shrine in my neighborhood was extremely wise and prudent.
I've been to Bayside hundreds of times since 1987. I originally went to my first rosary vigil in June of 1987 to debunk the happenings there, after finding a flyer lying in a pew in St. Patricks Cathedral in NYC. What I saw, felt and experienced first hand proved to me beyond a doubt that Bayside, the apparitions and messages are legitimate. I attribute my conversion and return to mass and receipt of the sacraments after being away for almost 20 years to the graces received at the apparition site. I created Bayside's first website [...] and ran it for 18 years, (using my own personal funds) I've read every message given and have watched the prophecies unfold over the years. Have talked with the shrine workers and dozens of people who owe their physical cures and/or spiritual conversion and return to the practice of the Catholic faith to Our Lady at Bayside, I've taken hundreds of inexplicable "miraculous" photos, and had photo labs examine them for authenticity. I've personally toured the original workshop and was given access to the shrine archives, mostly consisting of THOUSANDS of testimonial letters and inexplicable miraculous photos over a twenty year period. Our Lady of the Roses is legitimate. As for Laycock's book.... I would use it to line my birdcage...
