I always enjoy taking a closer look at what we were taught about history. Often the politics of the day influenced what we learned. Brune's book reveals the good and the bad in Papua New Guinea. A Japanese invasion of Australian soil was thwarted at Great cost, using a mixture of veterans from Europe and the Middle East, and Australian militia, their home reserve forces. Conditions were as bad as it can get, and General Douglas MacArthur, in overall command, did not help. Brune lays it out well, the heroes and the idiots. All in all, this is a fine addition to history of that campaign.

Wonderfully researched, and extremely well written. Finally, a record of what our fathers saw and how poorly they were treated. My father came home from the war disgusted with Blamey and hating "Dug Out Doug". Recommended reading.

An account of history that was happening a few miles away from me that I knew very little about.Very detailed. A little more so than I needed.But very much appreciated.

First-rate account of the Papuan campaign, 1943-43. Nasty, largely unheralded account of the campaign that foiled the Japanese attempt to occupy northern Australia and interdict U.S. supply lines from the U.S. and Hawaii.

My review of a replacement copy of A BASTARD OF A PLACE, purchased from Amazon. Paul Raymond wrote "Retreat From Kokoda" and made an acceptable account of the actions, but Peter Brune has published a very detailed and accurate research of the events and personalities involved in the Japanese attack on Papua in 1942, which resulted in the first ever land defeats of the Japanese army (4 in total), by Australian forces. As an Australian (Now Canadian), I was in Papua at the time. General MacArthur tried to conduct a war in mountainous country from a very safe location in Brisbane, Queensland, and having no personal first hand knowledge of the terrible conditions, made many irresponsible demands on the field forces. These battles were concluded about three weeks before the defeat of the Japs by U.S. Marines on Guardalcanal . Thank you, Peter Brune for this great production.

This is a very well researched book that gives a graphic account of the conditions, the bravery, the mistakes and the triumphs of the Australian forces fighting in the early days of the Papua New Guinea campaign. It also shows Australia's problems with political interference from Churchill in England and Roosevelt in the US; how we got landed with McArthur and Blamey ; and how the politicians and senior command were so out of touch with the events at the front. This book should be required reading for all students of modern Australian history; the truth was often censored or twisted at the time and it is only in recent times that balanced versions are coming to light.

Peter Brune is an informed and excellent writer. It is important all Australians develop a strong knowledge of the Papua New Giunea campaign given the significance of our involvement. It has become apparent to me that unless we, as Australians, develop this awareness we will never as a nation know given the revisionism that characterises the remembering of military history. An important read as a part of our striving to know, remember and identify.

Brune's account is very comprehensive and takes in the Milne Bay conflict which had such a pivotal role in the entire Papuan episode.Some excellent in-depth insights into individual soldiers that reinforce the importance of this conflict to Australia's future. We should all be more aware of this struggle.
