Review
A highly recommended masterpiece, a model of how historians should investigate the cross-cultural contacts between two elites, seemingly opposites, in the High Middle Ages. CHURCH HISTORY Demonstrates very effectively the ways in which military metaphors were employed to describe spiritual struggles, and provides many insights into the monastic mind. ENGLISH HISTORICAL REVIEW This important book is a welcome addition to the recent literature on the relations between medieval church and society. THE CATHOLIC HISTORICAL REVIEW Skilfully demonstrates that martial imagery was a major force in the creation of monastic culture. (...) Truly a remarkable achievement. Highly recommended. CHOICE

I must admit, I was a little disappointed in this book. I am judging, perhaps, unfairly since I did not expect the content that I found. The author first asserts that there has always been an assumption that the medieval world was divided by two main groups - those who prayed and those who fought and that the two had little in common. As one who reads a great deal of history, I have not seen such an assumption but I will grant that the author has far more exposure to other historians where it may seem more prevalent. With that said, it seemed to me that all the author's insistence against that assumption was so much stating the obvious. And, because of my sense that it was stating the obvious, it seemed dry and very slow paced. In the end, she showed the martial language that had developed in the monastic "militia Christi" ideal from the study of sacred scripture and early church writers. She goes on to demonstrate the similarities of monks and knights in their ascetic ideals and martial spirit - the monk seeing himself as no less a warrior than the knight. The author also traces the impact of warriors that left their lives as military men to become spiritual warriors of another kind. She goes on to explain how not only monks but many warriors became saints; exemplars of the spiritual life. Soldier and monk together demonstrating the virtues they both espoused in their two vocations. The conclusion of this work argues, as many have, for the understanding the importance of the church on all aspects of the medieval life. The author joins with many others in warning against our habit of studying history as compartmentalized and unattached "sacred" and "secular" streams. It was such insight in the conclusion of this book that brought me back to a middle ground rating. But it was a long and less than exciting journey for me to get there.
