As a portable Desk reference as I should say a more portable Desk reference then the Krause publication catalogs or world coins book series of which are great this makes a handy reference to take to coin shows and such . There are several drawbacks this book though and I hope I can get you to understand them. 1 this book does not contain all the coins minted from 1850 to 1964 even though it says it does. Although it does contain a wide variety of world coins and it can be used as a plausible reference to aid one in catalog of world coins.. as animism test I feel that this book will help me or help anybody even though it locks major information and some reference cases I will give this an instance as a point of reference I'm looking up Mexican one peso coins from 1918 to 1964... And this case the coins are not pictured in the catalog and totality but it's given a Boolean value referencefor price value when in actuality it can go for more.... The problem with a lot of these catalogs but you buy is that the coin value stated are few years old or become out of date a few weeks after publication a lot of coins that have bullion value as a price reference or value reference can actually trade higher or for better numismatic premium

I noticed a glaring typographical error on page 507 of the book regarding the weight of a Russian silver coin. For the Rubles 1886-1931 the gross weight is listed as 10.9957 grams while the silver weight is listed as 17.9961 grams! It is extremely obvious since the silver is listed as being heavier than the total weight of the coin! I'm guessing that the gross weight is the wrong one.Overall it is a great reference for identifying foreign coins I found that were issued between 1850-1964.

The introduction to the book does say that it "is essentially an introductory coin book, intended as an outline or framework for organizing a collection of type coins of the world. As such, it is useful for beginner and advanced collector alike as a handy source of information to supplement more complex books that list all dates, mints, and varieties." In that light, if you don't really care about values, then this book would be helpful. If you would like to know what your coin is made out of, this could be helpful, it has an appendix that gives you precious metal content for all the coins in this book. This could be handy for those interested in investing in world gold, silver, or platinum. If you would like a more in depth guide, please stay clear of this book.

Must for foreign coins
