Novel, a cohesive story of many moving parts, one that coalesces into a sum greater than those parts. I too have been bewildered about Auden's contention that "Poetry makes nothing happen". Chee challenges Auden's false humility faithfully and masterfully. This essay reminds me of God's challenge to another prophet: "Whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house), they shall know that there has been a prophet among them." (Ezekiel 2:5). I have a new literary hero now! I look forward to reading Alexander Chee's novels.
