I really liked this book, and got caught up in reading it, couldn't put it down. The chapters going between past and present slowly revealing the connections between Becca & Matt and young love. A love that neither character got over even though their lives went separate ways. The entire book you're waiting for them to admit their feelings for each other is just as strong as it was 18 years ago, waiting for them to rekindle their romance, going through all the build up of emotions ... BUT... then the book ends! There was no moment, no grand scene at the end of the book where they finally get together, none! Just a letter giving a recap of what happens. It's like the author wanted to finish the book but ran out of time so put a recap in a "letter" and missed out on the part that the entire book was leading up to. The book would have been great and I would have read it over & over if it gave you the ending it was leading up to. But instead it was a lot of build up leading to abrupt ending & disappointment
I was VERY DISAPPOINTED ! After reading " A Month in Tuscany " which I enjoyed, I ordered this book thinking I would get the same experience but this book felt as if it were written for a 13 year old girl.......very juvenile writting style and vocabulary.
Do you remember the love that you lost ? Do you remember being young and in love ? Do you remember people telling you that you were too young or that you could not marry the one you loved for various reasons , and life went on and you never forgot ... This book will take you back to the road not taken and the journey is worth the price of the book !
I usually read the reviews and let other people's opinions persuade whether or not I read a certain book. Well, this book got great reviews, some of the best I've seen. So, I did not hesitate to buy it. Along with the good reviews the synopsis sounded interesting. FALSE ADVERTISEMENT! It took everything I had to make it through 50% (and that was with skipping pages at a time)! I thought it was boring, the characters were under-developed and unlikeable. The cover is misleading, as well. I was confused by the setting/time frame until I finally realized that this family has religious beliefs of which they choose to minimize their interactions with the outside world... which is fine, but I would've preferred this piece of information to be included in the synopsis. Afterall, it was the main cause of most of the conflict in the story. On a positive note, it was well written/edited, with very little spelling and grammar mistakes. Usually, this would encourage me to read another book from this author, but the story itself left me nervous to try again. Like I said before, I will think again before trusting reviews. Now I'm afraid that I've passed up some really good books due to untrustworthy reviews!
The author is telling you a very emotional story about people, young and old, and how they deal with social pressures, family ideals, and past decisions. Truly a book written from the heart, emotional and gut wrenching at times. With a few calm and breezy moments thrown in.Skipping back and forth between past and present, the author tells you at the beginning of each chapter whether it’s “Then†or “Now,†making it easy to follow the changes from past to present or the reverse. The first forty pages I thought it was the most depressing read I’d ever picked up. Well, surprise, it turned out to be one of the best books I’ve ever read. And at 76 I’ve read my share.
First time I've read this author, and most definitely last. The true essence of the story is grossly re-interpreted in the author's description. Nothing against them, I live in a community that is 50% Mennonite, but if I wanted to read a story about them, I would. I would go out and purchase it, and I am disappointed that one of the prevailing themes in the book was so completely misrepresented.I won't read this author again, and I think that she might find more success if she was less misleading in her description.
This was without a doubt the most depressing book I ever read. There was absolutely nothing happy about it. This book was strong on religious beliefs which led them to why they made the choices they made. I had no idea from reading the brief summary that this book was about perhaps leaning toward the Amish ways. I have nothing against that, but would have liked to have known that. The characters were the saddest, most miserable characters I have ever read about; none of them very likeable either. Becca, the main character cried on practically every other page. Warning, if you are depressed and looking for an uplifting novel, feel-good read, this is definitely not for you. It will not make you feel better regardless of how it ended which was also a disappointment. After going through all the misery with these characters; the story kind of just ended in a summary of sorts. Now I'm crying over the money I spent to purchase it and I am hesitant to read any of her other novels.
The book was very captivating in the beginning and middle, really had me hooked, but the ending was so short, to the point, and basically ruined the book for me, it was beautifully written and then I felt as if the ending was rushed.
