From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-Brett presents the biblical story from the perspective of Noah's granddaughter. The child watches the construction of the ark and the arrival of its passengers. Once they are on board and the rain falls, she untangles the crowded beasts so that they can all sleep peacefully. When the storm ends, Grandpa Noah releases her pet dove to search for land. After the creatures disembark, she helps him plant a seed to start life anew. This familiar story serves as a vehicle for Brett's watercolor-and-gouache panoramas of animals, birds, and insects from all corners of the Earth. Even the dodo appears. Each spread features a large scene surrounded by a papyrus border. Smaller pictures that relate to the central image are presented in animal-shaped frames to the left and right. Close-up views of insects appear near the corner of some pages and the dove also has a spot in many illustrations. Such details add to the book's interest for older children, who can find something new to explore during repeat readings. Brett's fans will recognize her artistic style, and where her work is popular, this book is a "must purchase." Other librarians may want to assess demand for Noah stories versus the number of titles in the collection, including Jerry Pinkney's Noah's Ark (North-South, 2002). If there is room for one more interpretation, this one is worth considering.Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, MankatoCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
PreS-Gr. 1. There's no mention of a wrathful God in this beautifully illustrated retelling of the familiar story of the ark, which is related through the viewpoint of Noah's granddaughter. As the water rises, Noah and his family prepare while the animal pairs march aboard. The 40 days and nights in the ark are restless and crowded, but the girl tries to make everyone comfortable. Finally, she sends her dove in search of land, and a new world begins. The words are basic and effective; it's the detailed watercolors of the animals that are the real attraction here. In precise brushstrokes and vivid colors, Brett creates incredibly textured feathers and fur, and the appealing book design positions the images on backgrounds made to resemble papyrus scrolls. Very young children will want to point out their favorite animals in the parade; older ones who know the story may enjoy this kinder, secular version. The illustrations are great, right up there with the rest of Mrs. Brett’s books. I’m more disturbed by the story, it doesn’t line up with the Bible story at all. It never talk about grandchildren being on the ark, all the animals had their rooms to be in and the whole earth was covered by water 20ft+ higher than the highest peak. The last thing is that nothing was said about the promise God made with Noah and mankind to never flood the earth. I wouldn’t recommend this book because it’s not telling the full truth about the story of Noah.
more on the images of a child (Noah's grandson), and the animals as he sees them- sleeping, awake, crowded, etc. The story is told mostly through the images, with very short narrative of 1-2 sentences per page. This was a nice baptism gift for our niece, who is not extremely religious- as it was a bible story presented in a very friendly non-preachy tone. It would be just as nice for a child who regularly attends church/ Sunday school and is familiar with the story, as they would enjoy the pictures and be able to discuss the meaning and events in more depth with their parents.
Jan Brett offers so much to children around the world. Her stories are wonderfully written, while her illustrations are works of art.On Noah's Ark is written from the perspective of Noah's grandchild. It is a creative way to really help children imagine what it may have been like on the ark with all of those animals.Just like Brett's other more well known books, such as the Mitten, this one also has the great pictures. She is a master at creating a main picture, while hiding details of whats to come around the edges.A definite favorite.[...]
Jan Brett's Artwork is ALWAYS a Feast for the eyes! My Grandaughter Loves this Book. Although it takes a few 'liberties" with The Scriptural Account, it is a springboard to introduction and discussion concerning TRUE HISTORY.
Very cute little board book!
Jan Brett books are requested gifts in this family.
This is another lovely book by Jan Brett. The artwork is wonderful and the text is from the viewpoint of Noah's grandson. I bought this for our church library and am glad I did. I also suggest "Naamah: The Story of Noah's Wife" by Sandy Eisenberg Sasso for little girls. It stresses Naamah's job in preserving seeds and plants for use after the flood, and makes the Noah story less of a "men did the whole thing" story. Women were there too and obviously did a lot of work in saving the family and animals, too.
Product exactly as described and shipped on time.
